Chem 122-Today we will go over the pre-lab for the organic labs tomorrow. You will work with a partner and make up a reaction chart page for exam review(20 min) and then we will go over any problems with the first review sheets.
Chem 121-Today you will see a video on buffers and then do the right side of friday's handout. Homeword read p 620 to p 621 on buffers. Make your own notes. Answer the following:
1. Use the five step process to predict the quantitative reaction of a carbonic acid-hydrogen carbonate ion buffer.
a) when a small amount of HCl (aq) is added. Hint: the entities/ions present are carbonic acid, hydrogen carbonate ion, hydronium ion , chloride ion and water...now keep going with the five step process....
b) when a small amount of NaOH is added.
2. What happens when a small amount of strong acid or base is added to a buffer?
3. Use Lechatelier's principle to predict what will happen to an acetic acid-acetate ion buffer when
a) a small amount of HCL(aq) is added b) a small amount of NaOH(aq) is added.
Chem 112-Today you will learn about the ideal gas law. Since I have to go to the dentist Miss Logue will work with you this afternoon. She will give you notes on the ideal gas law, then you wil practise some calculations. During the last 10 minutes you will finish friday's work on mol/mol and vol/vol stoichiometry in pairs and pass this in for marking. You will also submit your homework from the weekend for marking. Chem 122-We will review the reactions of organic compounds and do some group review for friday's test on Ch 23. You will give some of your answers to the worksheets in class today(these were given out before the holiday break) Please do not forget that the project on the pharmaceutical, drug or pesticide is due today. You will do an in class assignment on polymers and pass it in today.
Chem 121-Today will be spent completing labs and doing the last few five step questions from the handout you were working with before the break. You will also receive a graphing assignment that is due on friday of this week. There will be a five step quiz on friday. Please come into the lab today at noon hour if you have anything left to finish from your labs as the 122 class will be starting organic labs very soon.
Chem 112-Today we will start on our last unit for chem 112. It is on gases. This unit is very short and will be tested next thursday. If you missed the test before christmas you should be prepared to write it during class time tomorrow. Today we will go over stoichiometry with gases from 10.2 in your textbook. You will work with molar volume and some formulas n=v/V, n=m/M and m/M=v/V and some terminology like STP, Avogadros' hypothesis. Chem 112- Quiz on stoichiometry. We went over some VSEPR. there was a short discussion on intermolecular forces. Please make sure that you complete the orange review sheet for thursday. Chem 122- Today you learned aobut the ester family and esterification reactions. From the Sanford study sheet you did #6a,b,c and you were given another handout that had reactions that were either esterification or acid/base neutralization. Do #21 all.Chem 121-Today we looked at mol/mol stoichiometry and then we went over titration curves onces again and choice of indicator. You worked on titration calculations with one and two endpoints and did a calculation in class that involved two endpoints.
Chem 112-Period 4-today you received your quiz on stoichiometry back.. There will be another quiz on this tomorrow. You were given some time to start an assignment on the Solvay Process. This will be due on wednesday.
Period 5 did the same as period 4, but we went over trigonal bipyramid and octahedral shapes. From the handout you were assigned 13, 16, 17, 19, 20. This class was only given five minutes for working on the Solvay assignment.

Chem 112-You will do an assignment in class on the solvay process on monday. This will involve researching, in detail, a very important chemical process. You will have an assignment that is due on wednesday that uses your research...design a pamphlet of information that someone can read in order to find out what this process is all about. It should be colourful, informative and creative. There should be the byproducts, the major products, the major reaction, the breakthrough reaction and some history on Solvay and the develpoment of the process. This is due on wednesday. We will do a quiz on stoichiometry.

Chem 122-The five step process for predicting acid/base equilibria. We will practise predicting the most likely reaction for acids and bases. I read out three questions for you to try with using Bronsted Lowry to predict acid/base equilibria. The third question involved using baking soda to netralize methanoic acid from a sting of a wasp or bee.
Chem 121-Today you completed the candle mini-lab, and were assigned 11. b and redo 10 a,b from orange sheet. We spent a little more time on calculations involving the use of energy per mol and quantity.

You will also have a homework check to make sure you have done the calorimeter calculations from thursday. In addition to what the lab outline asks, you will be required to find the number of molecules of candle wax burned in the given time. You will also be required to figure out how long you will have to burn the candle to use up a mole of wax. Do not forget mole day.

Chem 122-New unit starting today Ch 19 dealswith acids, bases and salts. We are going to start with 19.2 in class. You will be doing some theory work from 19.1 for homework on your own. Chem 122-Today you will watch part of a video on energy and enthalpy(we may do this on friday instead...20 minutes). You will receive an outline topic sheet for the test coming on monday. It is like the study guide at the end of the chapter.We will review exothermic and endothermic reactions too. If time permits we will do the small scale lab on burning a candle and figuring out the heat of combustion. You will collect evidence and do an analysis for your data. this will be passed in tomorrow if you do not complete it today.

Chem 122-More work with calorimeter calculations and reaction calculations where a reaction is providing energy for heating water in a hot water tank. I assigned 27 to 33 on p 526 and p 531. I also went over an example from the handout...#19(ans. -3.35 GJ) and gave you time to do #21(ans - 44.4 kg) in class. We did a guided reading activity that covered 17.4. this was passed in for marking. Test next monday on Ch 17 and energy calculations.
Chem 121-Project time for 1/2 of the class
Chem 112-You will do a pre lab for half of the class and we will tie up some loose ends for tomorrow's test on the first unit. Chem 121-Well, we have gone through all of the families for organic that lead up to next week's test. We will be starting group work today and we will also do some Petroleum/Natural gas Chemistry from 22.5. You will be given time to read through 22.5 and do a guided reading exercise. this is to be completed for thursday. This will help you make up some notes on this section. We will go over some of the worksheet from yesterday. This worksheet is to be complete for wednesday.You found out who is in your group for your organic project. You will note that the details of this project are given in the Chem 121 link. an enlargement of the work from section 5 is also contained in the link.
Chem 122-Today we will do some more practise with heating and cooling curves. You will get some additional practise work for the heating and cooling curves and the next few topics we cover as the textbook does not contain enough practse on this topic and the remaining topics in the unit. Please do #21, #22a, b off of the worksheet for tomorrow.
Chem 112-Today you will get the opportunity to do a lab safety exercise in the lab for half of the class. Please review R 80-81 and be aware of the fact that there will be a quiz on lab safety and metric tomorrow. I will also give you an additional metric conversion practice sheet. Chem 122-Today we went over heating curves. I fully labelled a curve for water with formulas, potential energy, states, kinetic energy. You are to do the same for ethanol(grain alcohol). I did not give you a mass in order for you to work out all five calculations for the cooling curve. I did not give you the starting or finishing temperature. YIKES!!! so if you happen to check this site out, assume the mass is 1.52 grams and that the starting temperature is 102C and the finishing temperature is -134C. I gave the bp and mp to you in class bp= 76C mp= -114C. You were given more time to complete the group work that you did last week.
Chem 121-Today you were introduced to aromatic hydrocarbons. This family will require quite a bit of study as this is the only way you will know their names and structures. You received a worksheet to practise all of the families we have done so far. Please do all of the odd numbered questions. We will be starting some project work this week. There will be a test on Ch 22 next monday or wednesday. Your drawings of the C8 isomers(all 18 of them) with names is due on wednesday.
Chem 112 P4,P5- Today we looked at the Quantum mechanical model of the atom. We looked at indicating the energy level, orbital and number of electrons in a partcular orbital. I introduced the diagonal rule to students. This section can be found in the textbook from page 164-166. Write the electron configuration for the following atoms. Period 4 was assigned Pd, Rn, U for homework. Period 5 was assigned Rn, As, Ag, U for homework. We checked over the work from last thursday p 42 #1-8 and p 160 #1 to 7.

Chem 122-We did an example of a calculation involving a phase change. I assigned p 521 21, 22 and p 524 23, 24. we did some group work with enthalpy and heat flow today. You received some great tables for reference.(this will be passed out on monday....photocopier problems thanks Miss Logue for making a sheet of tables:)
Chem 121-Today we will go over cis and trans isomers(geometric), cycloalkanes as well as isomers of alkyl groups. P 707 #25 You will receive a worksheet for practising naming alkanes/enes/ynes over the weekend(this will be given on monday).
Chem 112 P4 We went over separation of matter today. I also explained that there was an assignment involving the scientists who worked with the atom. p 128-129, 144 contain the names and contributions of the scientists. the scientist name as well as their contribution have to be included in a creative way to help one study these scientists. This study device or aid is due next tuesday.

Chem 121- Today we completed our work on alkanes with a short review. I introduced saturated, unsaturated and the fact that there are two more families to work with..alkenes and alkynes. We finished the class by working with a partner to draw the isomers of a seven carbon alkane. By the end of class several students had 7 drawn...there are more :) Homework p 697 #1,2 p 699 #3, 4 p 700 #5,6 p 701 #7 to 12 p 703 13 to 17(17 is some work that makes you think ahead...try it...a challenge :)

1. Use the five step process to predict the quantitative reaction of a carbonic acid-hydrogen carbonate ion buffer.
a) when a small amount of HCl (aq) is added. Hint: the entities/ions present are carbonic acid, hydrogen carbonate ion, hydronium ion , chloride ion and water...now keep going with the five step process....
b) when a small amount of NaOH is added.
2. What happens when a small amount of strong acid or base is added to a buffer?
3. Use Lechatelier's principle to predict what will happen to an acetic acid-acetate ion buffer when
a) a small amount of HCL(aq) is added b) a small amount of NaOH(aq) is added.
Chem 112-Today you will learn about the ideal gas law. Since I have to go to the dentist Miss Logue will work with you this afternoon. She will give you notes on the ideal gas law, then you wil practise some calculations. During the last 10 minutes you will finish friday's work on mol/mol and vol/vol stoichiometry in pairs and pass this in for marking. You will also submit your homework from the weekend for marking. Chem 122-We will review the reactions of organic compounds and do some group review for friday's test on Ch 23. You will give some of your answers to the worksheets in class today(these were given out before the holiday break) Please do not forget that the project on the pharmaceutical, drug or pesticide is due today. You will do an in class assignment on polymers and pass it in today.
Chem 121-Today will be spent completing labs and doing the last few five step questions from the handout you were working with before the break. You will also receive a graphing assignment that is due on friday of this week. There will be a five step quiz on friday. Please come into the lab today at noon hour if you have anything left to finish from your labs as the 122 class will be starting organic labs very soon.
Chem 112-Today we will start on our last unit for chem 112. It is on gases. This unit is very short and will be tested next thursday. If you missed the test before christmas you should be prepared to write it during class time tomorrow. Those who did this test during the friday before the break will work on the assigned work in class and have no homework for tomorrow,s class. Today we will go over stoichiometry with gases from 10.2 in your textbook. You will work with molar volume and some formulas n=v/V, n=m/M and m/M=v/V and some terminology like STP, Avogadros' hypothesis. The assigned questions are p 301 20 and 21, as well as some from the smartboard notes. your homework for this evening is p 385 to 389(make 1/2 to 3/4 page of notes and do p 387 1, 2 and p 389 3 to 7.

Chem 122- Today you learned aobut the ester family and esterification reactions. From the Sanford study sheet you did #6a,b,c and you were given another handout that had reactions that were either esterification or acid/base neutralization. Do #21 all.Chem 121-Today we looked at mol/mol stoichiometry and then we went over titration curves onces again and choice of indicator. You worked on titration calculations with one and two endpoints and did a calculation in class that involved two endpoints.
Chem 112-Period 4-today you received your quiz on stoichiometry back.. There will be another quiz on this tomorrow. You were given some time to start an assignment on the Solvay Process. This will be due on wednesday.
Period 5 did the same as period 4, but we went over trigonal bipyramid and octahedral shapes. From the handout you were assigned 13, 16, 17, 19, 20. This class was only given five minutes for working on the Solvay assignment.

We will examine some titration curves.You will see the video scheduled on last friday....this friday instead. today we went over titration calculations with one endpoint and two endpoints. You worked on a calculation in class involving an acid base neutralization with two endpoints in class.
Chem 112-You will do an assignment in class on the solvay process on monday. This will involve researching, in detail, a very important chemical process. You will have an assignment that is due on wednesday that uses your research...design a pamphlet of information that someone can read in order to find out what this process is all about. It should be colourful, informative and creative. There should be the byproducts, the major products, the major reaction, the breakthrough reaction and some history on Solvay and the develpoment of the process. This is due on wednesday. We will do a quiz on stoichiometry.

In addition to what the lab outline asks, you will be required to find the number of molecules of candle wax burned in the given time. You will also be required to figure out how long you will have to burn the candle to use up a mole of wax. Do not forget mole day.

Chem 122-New unit starting today Ch 19 dealswith acids, bases and salts. We are going to start with 19.2 in class. You will be doing some theory work from 19.1 for homework on your own. I will give you a handout that we will use for practising pH and POH once I go over an introduction to the ion product constant(also known as the ionization constant) for water. Homework tonight: Finish calculations from top left of worksheet #1, 2, 3 and bottom left worksheet #1, 2 Make up at least ten questions that cover the theory form 19.1, next write the answers on the back of the page. this will be passed in tomorrow for marks.Chem 121- Today we will finish our group work(delayed to thursday) and I will also review heats of solution and go over the answers to the heating and cooling curves. Chem 122-More work with calorimeter calculations and reaction calculations where a reaction is providing energy for heating water in a hot water tank. I assigned 27 to 33 on p 526 and p 531. I also went over an example from the handout...#19(ans. -3.35 GJ) and gave you time to do #21(ans - 44.4 kg) in class. We did a guided reading activity that covered 17.4. this was passed in for marking. Test next monday on Ch 17 and energy calculations.Chem 121-Project time for 1/2 of the class

Chem 122- today you will work with Hess' Law. It will involve working with chemical equations that are dealt with mathematically. You will be given some planning time for this and then we will go over the answers to the worksheet. You will get half of tomorrow's class and half of friday's class as well. Then next tuesday you will get half of the class to finalize plans for your project. We will start presenting next thursday. We will do some group review of organic ch 22.

Chem 121-Well, we have gone through all of the families for organic that lead up to next week's test. We will be starting group work today and we will also do some Petroleum/Natural gas Chemistry from 22.5. You will be given time to read through 22.5 and do a guided reading exercise. this is to be completed for thursday. This will help you make up some notes on this section. We will go over some of the worksheet from yesterday. This worksheet is to be complete for wednesday.You found out who is in your group for your organic project. You will note that the details of this project are given in the Chem 121 link. an enlargement of the work from section 5 is also contained in the link.Chem 122-Today we will do some more practise with heating and cooling curves. You will get some additional practise work for the heating and cooling curves and the next few topics we cover as the textbook does not contain enough practse on this topic and the remaining topics in the unit. Chem 112-Today you will get the opportunity to do a lab safety exercise in the lab for half of the class. Please review R 80-81 and be aware of the fact that there will be a quiz on lab safety and metric tomorrow. I will also give you an additional metric conversion practice sheet. Chem 122-Today we went over heating curves. I fully labelled a curve for water with formulas, potential energy, states, kinetic energy. You are to do the same for ethanol(grain alcohol). I did not give you a mass in order for you to work out all five calculations for the cooling curve. I did not give you the starting or finishing temperature. YIKES!!! so if you happen to check this site out, assume the mass is 1.52 grams and that the starting temperature is 102C and the finishing temperature is -134C. I gave the bp and mp to you in class bp= 76C mp= -114C. You were given more time to complete the group work that you did last week.
Chem 121-Today you were introduced to aromatic hydrocarbons. This family will require quite a bit of study as this is the only way you will know their names and structures. You received a worksheet to practise all of the families we have done so far. Please do all of the odd numbered questions. We will be starting some project work this week. There will be a test on Ch 22 next monday or wednesday. Your drawings of the C8 isomers(all 18 of them) with names is due on wednesday.
Chem 112 P4,P5- Today we looked at the Quantum mechanical model of the atom. We looked at indicating the energy level, orbital and number of electrons in a partcular orbital. I introduced the diagonal rule to students. This section can be found in the textbook from page 164-166. Write the electron configuration for the following atoms. Period 4 was assigned Pd, Rn, U for homework. Period 5 was assigned Rn, As, Ag, U for homework. We checked over the work from last thursday p 42 #1-8 and p 160 #1 to 7.

Chem 122-We did an example of a calculation involving a phase change. I assigned p 521 21, 22 and p 524 23, 24. we did some group work with enthalpy and heat flow today. You received some great tables for reference.(this will be passed out on monday....photocopier problems thanks Miss Logue for making a sheet of tables:)
Chem 121-Today we will go over cis and trans isomers(geometric), cycloalkanes as well as isomers of alkyl groups. P 707 #25 You will receive a worksheet for practising naming alkanes/enes/ynes over the weekend(this will be given on monday).
Chem 112 P4 We went over separation of matter today. I also explained that there was an assignment involving the scientists who worked with the atom. p 128-129, 144 contain the names and contributions of the scientists. the scientist name as well as their contribution have to be included in a creative way to help one study these scientists. This study device or aid is due next tuesday.

Chem 121-Naming alkenes and alkynes. More isomers....A chain with 8 carbons.....We also named the isomers from yesterday. You worked in pairs on octane isomers after I went through naming alkenes and alkynes.

I only spent a short time going over enthalpy changes and calorimetry from 17.2 before we ran out of time. I assigned p 510 3, 4 and p 516 #14, 15(these two questions are tricky.....do not panic yet), 16, 17
Chem 121- Today we completed our work on alkanes with a short review. I introduced saturated, unsaturated and the fact that there are two more families to work with..alkenes and alkynes. We finished the class by working with a partner to draw the isomers of a seven carbon alkane. By the end of class several students had 7 drawn...there are more :) Homework p 697 #1,2 p 699 #3, 4 p 700 #5,6 p 701 #7 to 12 p 703 13 to 17(17 is some work that makes you think ahead...try it...a challenge :)
